The Venkatesh Stotra (व्यंकटेश स्तोत्र), also known as Prarthana Shatak, is a revered Marathi devotional hymn composed by Saint Devidasa. This powerful stotra consists of 108 verses that invoke the divine blessings of Lord Venkatesha (Tirupati Balaji). Om, I bow to Lord Ganesha (Heramba). You are the beginning of all beginnings. Remembering the beauty of your form, I offer my salutations with devotion.

MEANING
My salutations to the swan-mounted Goddess Saraswati, the bestower of the boon of speech. Grant me the ability to compose this text, which is a mine of sacred meaning.

MEANING
Victory to you, O Venkata Ramana! Ocean of mercy, the Complete One. O Supreme Light, profound radiance, I pray to you — please listen.

जननीपरी त्वां पाळिले । पितयापरी त्वां सांभाळिले । सकळ संकटांपासुनि रक्षिले । पूर्ण दिधले प्रेमसुख
MEANING
Like a mother, you have nurtured me. Like a father, you have protected me. You have shielded me from all calamities and blessed me with the fullness of love.

Even if this seems extraordinary, you have created this entire world. The qualities of father and mother have naturally come to you.

O Lord of the poor, for the sake of love, you have protected your devotees in times of distress. You have given them extraordinary love, for the sake of their devotion.

MEANING
Now hear my humble petition, O merciful consort of Lakshmi. Having placed me in this wondrous creation, you have shown me extraordinary things.

तुज न जाणता झालो कष्टी । आता दृढ तुझे पायी घातली मिठी । कृपाळुवा जगजेठी । अपराध पोटी घाली माझे
MEANING
Not knowing You, I suffered greatly. Now I have firmly clasped Your feet. O merciful Lord of the universe, take my sins into Your heart and forgive them.

MEANING
The heaps of my sins have pierced through to the sky. O compassionate Hrishikesha, stay true to Your own promise of redeeming the fallen.

MEANING
A mother does not grieve over a thousand faults of her son. Likewise, You are my compassionate Govinda, my mother and father.

उडदांमाजी काळेगोरे । काय निवडावे निवडणारे । कुचलिया वृक्षांची फळे । मधुर कोठोनी असतील
MEANING
Among urad beans, who separates the black from the white? How can the fruits of stunted trees ever be sweet?

अराटीलागी मृदुता । कोठोनी असेल कृपावंता । पाषाणासी गुल्मलता । कैशियापरी फुटतील

How can a castor plant have softness, O merciful one? How can creepers sprout from stone?

आपादमस्तकावरी अन्यायी । परी तुझे पदरी पडिलो पाही । आता रक्षण नाना उपायी । करणे तुज उचित

I am unjust from head to toe, yet I have taken refuge at Your shelter. Now it is fitting for You to protect me by every means.

समर्थांचे घरीचे श्र्वान । त्यासी सर्वही देती मान । तैसा तुझा म्हणवितो दीन । हा अपमान कवणाचा

Even the dog of a powerful master is respected by all. Likewise I call myself Yours—whose dishonor would it be if I am neglected?

Lakshmi sits at Your feet, yet we wander begging with a satchel. How will Your reputation remain intact, O Govinda?

Kubera is Your treasurer, yet You make us wander door to door. What glory is there in this for You, O Murari?

You provided endless cloth to Draupadi, O fortunate one. From where did You bring this stinginess towards us, O Govinda?

मावेची करुनी द्रौपदी सती । अन्ने पुरविली मध्यराती । ऋषीश्र्वरांच्या बैसल्या पंक्ती । तृप्त केल्या क्षणमात्रे
MEANING
Through Draupadi, the virtuous one, You provided food at midnight. When rows of great sages were seated, You satisfied them all in an instant.

अन्नासाठी दाही दिशा । आम्हां फिरविसी जगदीशा । कृपाळुवा परमपुरुषा । करुणा कैशी तुज न ये
MEANING
For food, You make us wander in all ten directions, O Lord of the world. O merciful Supreme Being, does compassion not arise in You?

अंगीकारी या शिरोमणि । तुज प्रार्थितो मधुर वचनी । अंगीकार केलिया झणी । मज हातींचे न सोडावे
MEANING
Accept me, O crest-jewel among all! I pray to You with sweet words. Once You have accepted me, do not let me go from Your hand.

समुद्रे अंगीकारीला वडवानळ । तेणे अंतरी होतसे विहवळ । ऐसे असोनी सर्वकाळ । अंतरी साठविला तयाने
MEANING
The ocean accepted the submarine fire (Vadavanal), which causes inner turmoil. Yet despite this, it has kept it stored within forever.

कूर्मे पृथ्वीचा घेतला भार । तेणे सोडीला नाही बडिवार । एवढा ब्रम्हांडगोळ थोर । त्याचा अंगीकार पै केला
MEANING
The tortoise (Kurma avatar) bore the weight of the earth and never boasted about it. It accepted the burden of this vast universe.

शंकरे धरिले हाळाहळा । तेणे नीळवर्ण झाला गळा । परी त्यागिले नाही गोपाळा । भक्तवत्सला गोविंदा
MEANING
Shankara held the deadly poison (Halahala), which turned His throat blue. Yet He never abandoned it. Likewise, O Gopala, O Govinda, lover of devotees, do not abandon me.

माझ्या अपराधांच्या परी । वर्णिता शिणली वैखरी । दृष्ट पतीत दुराचारी । अधमाहुनि अधम
MEANING
My speech has grown weary describing my sins. I am wicked, fallen, of evil conduct—the lowest of the low.

विषयासक्त मंदमति आळशी । कृपण कुव्यसनी मलिन मानसी । सदा सर्वकाळ सज्जनांशी । द्रोह करी सर्वदा
MEANING
I am attached to sense pleasures, dull-witted, lazy, miserly, addicted to vices, impure in mind, and I always bear malice towards the virtuous.

वचनोक्ति नाही मधुर । अत्यंत जनांसी निष्ठुर । सकळ पामरांमाजी पामर । व्यर्थ बडिवार जगी वाजे
MEANING
My speech is not sweet; I am extremely cruel to people. I am the most wretched among the wretched, yet empty boasting resounds in the world.

काम क्रोध मद मत्सर । हे शरीर त्यांचे बिढार । कामकल्पनेसी थार । दृढ येथे केला असे
MEANING
Lust, anger, pride, and envy—this body is their dwelling. Desire and fantasy have firmly established their stronghold here.

अठरा भार वनस्पतींची लेखणी । समुद्र भरला मषीकरुनी । माझे अवगुण लिहिता धरणी । तरी लिहिले न जाती
MEANING
Even if pens were made from all the plants of eighteen forests, and the ocean filled with ink, writing my faults on the earth—they still could not all be written.

ऐसा पतित मी खरा । परी तू पतितपावन शारद्गधरा । तुवा अंगीकार केलिया गदाधरा । कोण दोषगुण गणील
MEANING
I am truly such a fallen one. But You are the purifier of the fallen, O Sharngadhara. Once You accept me, O Gadadhara, who will count my faults and virtues?

नीच रतली रायाशी । तिसी कोण म्हणेल दासी । लोह लागता परिसासी । पूर्वास्थिती मग कैंची
MEANING
When a lowly woman is united with a king, who would call her a maidservant? When iron touches the philosopher's stone, its former state ceases to exist.

गावीचे होते लेंडवोहळ । गंगेसी मिळता गंगाजळ । कागविष्ठेचे झाले पिंपळ । तयांसी निद्य कोण म्हणे
MEANING
A village drain, upon joining the Ganges, becomes Ganga water. A Peepal tree grows from crow droppings—who would call it impure?

तसा कुजाति मी अमंगळ । परी तुझा म्हणवितो केवळ । कन्या देऊनिया कुळ । मग काय विचारावे
MEANING
Similarly, I am of low birth and inauspicious, yet I call myself solely Yours. Once a daughter is given in marriage, why question the family's worth?

जाणत असता अपराधी नर । तरी का केला अंगीकार । अंगीकारावरी अव्हेर । समर्थे न केला पाहिजे
MEANING
Knowing me to be a sinner, why did You accept me? Having accepted, the powerful one should never reject.

धाव पाव रें गोविंदा । हाती घेवोनिया गदा । करी माझ्या कर्माचा चेंदा । सच्चिदानंदा श्रीहरी

Rush to my aid, O Govinda! Taking the mace in hand, destroy the bondage of my karma, O Sachidananda Sri Hari!

The power of Your name is immeasurable — what are my sins before it? O merciful Lord of Lakshmi, reflect well upon this in Your heart.

MEANING
Your name purifies the fallen. Your name burns away the sins of Kali Yuga. Your name liberates from worldly bondage. Your name destroys all calamities.

Now hear my prayer, O Lord of Kamala (Lakshmi). May my mind remain fixed upon your name. This is what I ask again and again, O Supreme Light, O Venkatesha.

तू अनंत तुझी अनंत नामे । तयांमाजी अति सुगमे । ती मी अल्पमति प्रेमे । स्मरूनी प्रार्थना करीतसे

You are infinite and Your names are infinite. Among them, the easiest ones I, of limited intellect, lovingly remember and offer this prayer.

O Padmanabha, Damodara, profoundly radiant, supreme beyond the supreme, beginningless origin, sustainer of the universe, savior of the world, Lord of the cosmos!

कृष्णा विष्णो हृषीकेशा । अनिरुद्धा पुरुषोत्तमा परेशा । नृसिंह वामन भार्गवेशा । बौद्ध कलंकी निजमूर्ती

O Krishna, Vishnu, Hrishikesha, Aniruddha, Purushottama, supreme Lord! O Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Buddha, Kalki — all Your own divine forms!

O protector of the helpless, primeval being, complete Brahman, eternal and faultless, lord of all auspiciousness, life of the virtuous, embodiment of bliss!

O one beyond all qualities yet knower of all qualities, immersed in self-knowledge, purely sattvic, wise, master of virtues, supreme Lord!

O spotless, unchanging, complete one, mine of discernment, ocean of dispassion, slayer of demons Madhu and Mura, crusher of demons, fierce form!

MEANING
O bearer of conch, discus and mace, rider of Garuda, beloved of devotees, enchanter of the gopis' hearts, giver of joy — of unbroken, eternal nature!

O director of the many cosmic plays, pervader of the universe, foremost in all creation, ocean of mercy, abode of compassion, meditated upon by sages — the original, primal form!

ऐसी प्रार्थना करुनी देवीदास । अंतरी आठविला श्रीव्यंकटेश । स्मरता हृदयी प्रकटला ईश । त्या सुखासी पार नाही
MEANING
Having offered such prayers, Devidasa remembered Shri Venkatesh in his heart. Upon remembrance, the Lord manifested in his heart — that bliss was boundless.

हृदयी आविर्भवली मूर्ति । त्या सुखाची अलोलिक स्थिती । आपुले आपण श्रीपती । वाचेहाती वदवीतसे
MEANING
The divine form appeared in his heart. The state of that bliss was extraordinary. The Lord Himself spontaneously caused His own description to flow through Devidasa's speech.

ते स्वरूप अत्यंत सुंदर । श्रोती श्रवण कीजे सादर । सावळी तनु सुकुमार । कुंकुमाकार पादपद्मे
MEANING
That form is supremely beautiful — O listeners, hear with reverence. His dark complexion is delicate, and His lotus feet are saffron-colored.

सुरेख सरळ अंगोळिका । नखे जैसी चंद्ररेखा । घोटीव सुनीळ अपूर्व देखा । इंद्रनिळाचियेपरी
MEANING
His toes are shapely and straight, His nails shine like crescent moons. His polished, blue-hued form is wondrously beautiful, like a sapphire gem.

चरणी वाळे घागरिया । वाकी वरत्या गुजरिया । सरळ सुंदर पोटरिया । कर्दळीस्तंभाचियेपरी
MEANING
Anklets and jingling bells adorn His feet, with ornamental rings and bangles. His calves are straight and beautiful, like plantain stems.

गुडघे मांडिया जानुस्थळ । कटितटि किंकिणी विशाळ । खालते विश्वंउत्पत्तिस्थळ । वरी झळाळे सोनसळा
MEANING
His knees, thighs and joints are well-formed. At His waist, large jingling bells adorn. Below is the seat of universal creation, and above shines a golden garment.

कटीवरते नाभिस्थान । जेथोनि ब्रम्हा झाला उत्पन्न । उदरी त्रिवळी शोभे गहन । त्रैलोक्य संपूर्ण जयामाजी
MEANING
Above the waist is the navel, from which Lord Brahma was born. On His abdomen, three deep folds shine beautifully — within which the entire three worlds are contained.

वक्ष:स्थळी शोभे पदक । पाहोनी चंद्रमा अधोमुख । वैजयंती करी लखलख । विद्युल्लतेचियेपरी
MEANING
A pendant shines on His chest, seeing which the moon hangs its head in shame. The Vaijayanti garland sparkles like a streak of lightning.

हृदयी श्रीवत्सलांछन । भूषण मिरवी श्रीभगवान । तयावरते कंठस्थान । जयासी मुनिजन अवलोकिती
MEANING
On His heart is the Shrivatsa mark — the Lord wears it as His ornament. Above it is the neck, upon which sages lovingly gaze.

उभय बाहुदंड सरळ । नखे चंद्रापरीस तेजाळ । शोभती दोन्ही करकमळ । रातोत्पलाचियेपरी
MEANING
Both His arms are straight and strong. His nails shine bright like the moon. Both lotus-hands gleam beautifully, like red lotuses.

मनगटी विराजती कंकणे । बाहुवटी बाहुभूषणे । कंठी लेइली आभरणे । सूर्यकिरणे उगवली
MEANING
Bracelets adorn His wrists, armlets grace His upper arms, and ornaments around His neck shine like rising rays of the sun.

कंठावरुते मुखकमळ । हनुवटी अत्यंत सुनीळ । मुखचंद्रमा अति निर्मळ । भक्तस्नेहाळ गोविंदा
MEANING
Above the neck is His lotus-face. His chin is beautifully dark. His moon-like face is supremely pure — O Govinda, lover of devotees!

दोन्ही अधरांमाजी दंतपंक्ती । जिव्हा जैसी लावण्यज्योती । अधरामृतप्राप्तीची गती । ते सुख जाणे लक्ष्मी
MEANING
Between both lips are rows of teeth. His tongue is like a flame of beauty. The bliss of the nectar from His lips — only Lakshmi knows that joy.

सरळ सुंदर नासिक । जेथे पवनासी झाले सुख । गंडस्थळीचे तेज अधिक । लखलखीत दोन्ही भागी
MEANING
His nose is straight and beautiful — even the wind finds delight there. His cheeks radiate extraordinary brilliance, shining resplendently on both sides.

त्रिभुवनीचे तेज एकटवले । बरवेपण शिगेसी आले । दोन्ही पातयांनी धरिले । तेज नेत्र श्रीहरीचे
MEANING
The radiance of the three worlds has gathered together. Beauty has reached its pinnacle. Both eyelids hold that brilliance — such are the luminous eyes of Lord Sri Hari.

व्यंकटा भृकुटिया सुनीळा । कर्णद्वयाची अभिनव लीळा । कुंडलांच्या फाकती कळा । तो सुखसोहळा अलोलिक
MEANING
Lord Venkatesh's eyebrows are beautifully dark. The play of His two ears is wondrous. The brilliance of His earrings radiates splendor — that joyous spectacle is truly extraordinary.

भाळ विशाळ सुरेख । वरती शोभे कस्तूरीटिळक । केश कुरळ अलोलिक । मस्तकावरी शोभती
MEANING
His forehead is broad and beautiful. Upon it shines a mark of musk (kasturi tilak). His curly hair is extraordinary, adorning His head with splendor.

मस्तकी मुकुट आणि किरीटी । सभोवती झिळमिळ्याची दाटी । त्यावरी मयूरपिच्छांची वेटी । ऐसा जगजेठी देखिला
MEANING
Upon His head rests a crown and a diadem. All around shimmer dazzling gems. Atop it all, a cluster of peacock feathers — thus is the Lord of the universe beheld.

Such are you, O God of gods. Beyond all attributes, O Vasudeva. For the sake of my devotion, you have assumed a form with qualities.

आता करू तुझी पूजा । जगज्जीवना अधोक्षजा । आर्ष भावार्थ हा माझा । तुज अर्पण केला असे
MEANING
Now let me worship you, O life of the universe, O Adhokshaja. This sincere devotion of mine, I offer unto you.

करुनी पंचामृतस्नान । शुद्धोधक वरी घालून । तुज करू मंगलस्नान । पुरुषसूक्ते करुनिया
MEANING
Having bathed you with Panchamrit (five sacred nectars), and pouring pure water over it, I perform your auspicious bath chanting the Purusha Sukta hymn.

MEANING
Garments and the sacred thread, I offer to you with love. Sandalwood paste, rice grains, and abundant flowers — all I dedicate unto you.

Incense, lamp, and food offering; fruits, betel leaf, and sacred dakshina; garments, ornaments, hessonite, and ruby — all these I offer unto you.

One seeking marriage shall be married. One seeking wealth shall obtain wealth. One desiring a son shall have their wish fulfilled — by granting them a son.
