The Ram Raksha Stotram is a powerful hymn in praise of Lord Rama, believed to provide protection and divine grace to devotees. Composed by the sage Budha Kaushika after receiving it in a dream from Lord Shiva, this sacred prayer consists of 38 verses that invoke the blessings of Lord Rama for protection from all dangers and evils. Meditate upon Lord Rama Chandra with long arms reaching down to the knees, holding bow and arrows, seated in the lotus posture. He wears yellow garments and has eyes that compete with fresh lotus petals. His face is serene, with Sita on his left lap and his gaze meeting her lotus-like face. एकैकमक्षरं पुंसां महापातकनाशनम् ॥
Charitam Raghunāthasya Shatakoṭipravistaram |
Ekaikam Aksharam Pumsām Mahāpātakanāshanam ||
MEANING
The story of Lord Raghunatha is extensive, spanning hundreds of millions of verses. Each letter of this sacred narrative destroys even the greatest sins of mankind.2
ध्यात्वा नीलोत्पलश्यामं रामं राजीवलोचनम् ।
जानकीलक्ष्मणोपेतं जटामुकुटमण्डितम् ॥
Dhyātvā Nīlotpalashyāmam Rāmam Rājīvalochanam |
Jānakī Lakshmaṇopetam Jaṭāmukuṭamaṇḍitam ||
MEANING
Meditate upon Lord Rama with a complexion like blue lotus, lotus-like eyes, accompanied by Janaki (Sita) and Lakshmana, adorned with a crown of matted locks.3
सासितूणधनुर्बाणपाणिं नक्तञ्चरान्तकम् ।
स्वलीलया जगत्त्रातुमाविर्भूतमजं विभुम् ॥
Sāsitūṇadhanurbāṇapāṇim Naktamcharāntakam |
Svalīlayā Jagattrātum Āvirbhūtam Ajam Vibhum ||
MEANING
He holds sword, quiver, bow and arrows, destroyer of night-prowling demons. The unborn, all-pervading Lord manifested through His divine play to protect the world.4
रामरक्षां पठेत्प्राज्ञः पापघ्नीं सर्वकामदाम् ।
शिरो मे राघवः पातु भालं दशरथात्मजः ॥
Rāmarakshām Paṭhetprājñaḥ Pāpaghnīm Sarvakāmadām |
Shiro Me Rāghavaḥ Pātu Bhālam Dasharathātmajaḥ ||
MEANING
The wise should recite this Ram Raksha which destroys sins and fulfills all desires. May Raghava protect my head, may the son of Dasharatha protect my forehead.5
कौसल्येयो दृशौ पातु विश्वामित्रप्रियः श्रुती ।
घ्राणं पातु मखत्राता मुखं सौमित्रिवत्सलः ॥
Kausalyeyo Drishau Pātu Vishvāmitrapriyaḥ Shrutī |
Ghrāṇam Pātu Makhatrātā Mukham Saumitrivatsalaḥ ||
MEANING
May Kausalya's son protect my eyes, may Vishwamitra's beloved protect my ears, may the protector of the sacrifice protect my nose, may the affectionate brother of Lakshmana protect my mouth.6
जिह्वां विद्यानिधिः पातु कण्ठं भरतवन्दितः ।
स्कन्धौ दिव्यायुधः पातु भुजौ भग्नेशकार्मुकः ॥
Jihvām Vidyānidhiḥ Pātu Kaṇṭham Bharatavanditaḥ |
Skandhau Divyāyudhaḥ Pātu Bhujau Bhagneshakārmukaḥ ||
MEANING
May the repository of knowledge protect my tongue, may the one worshipped by Bharata protect my throat, may the holder of divine weapons protect my shoulders, may the one who broke Shiva's bow protect my arms.7
करौ सीतापतिः पातु हृदयं जामदग्न्यजित् ।
मध्यं पातु खरध्वंसी नाभिं जाम्बवदाश्रयः ॥
Karau Sītāpatiḥ Pātu Hridayam Jāmadagnyajit |
Madhyam Pātu Kharadhvamsī Nābhim Jāmbavadāshrayaḥ ||
MEANING
May Sita's lord protect my hands, may the conqueror of Parashurama protect my heart, may the destroyer of Khara protect my waist, may the refuge of Jambavan protect my navel.8
सुग्रीवेशः कटी पातु सक्थिनी हनुमत्प्रभुः ।
ऊरू रघूत्तमः पातु रक्षःकुलविनाशकृत् ॥
Sugrīveshaḥ Kaṭī Pātu Sakthinī Hanumatprabhuḥ |
Ūrū Raghūttamaḥ Pātu Rakshaḥkulavināshakrit ||
MEANING
May the lord of Sugriva protect my waist, may Hanuman's master protect my thighs, may the best of Raghu's lineage protect my upper legs, the destroyer of the demon clan.9
जानुनी सेतुकृत्पातु जङ्घे दशमुखान्तकः ।
पादौ बिभीषणश्रीदः पातु रामोऽखिलं वपुः ॥
Jānunī Setukritpātu Jaṅghe Dashamukhāntakaḥ |
Pādau Bibhīshaṇashrīdaḥ Pātu Rāmo'khilam Vapuḥ ||
MEANING
May the builder of the bridge protect my knees, may the destroyer of ten-headed Ravana protect my calves, may the bestower of glory to Vibhishana protect my feet, may Rama protect my entire body.10
एतां रामबलोपेतां रक्षां यः सुकृती पठेत् ।
स चिरायुः सुखी पुत्री विजयी विनयी भवेत् ॥
Etām Rāmabalopetām Rakshām Yaḥ Sukritī Paṭhet |
Sa Chirāyuḥ Sukhī Putrī Vijayī Vinayī Bhavet ||
MEANING
One who virtuously recites this protection endowed with Rama's strength becomes long-lived, happy, blessed with children, victorious, and humble.11
पातालभूतलव्योमचारिणश्छद्मचारिणः ।
न द्रष्टुमपि शक्तास्ते रक्षितं रामनामभिः ॥
Pātālabhūtalavyoma Chāriṇaśchhadmachāriṇaḥ |
Na Draṣṭumapi Shaktāste Rakshitam Rāmanāmabhiḥ ||
MEANING
Those who roam in the underworld, earth, and sky, even those who move in disguise, cannot even see one who is protected by the names of Rama.12
रामेति रामभद्रेति रामचन्द्रेति वा स्मरन् ।
नरो न लिप्यते पापैर्भुक्तिं मुक्तिं च विन्दति ॥
Rāmeti Rāmabhadreti Rāmachandreti Vā Smaran |
Naro Na Lipyate Pāpairbhuktim Muktim Cha Vindati ||
MEANING
One who remembers 'Rama', 'Ramabhadra', or 'Ramachandra' is not touched by sins and attains both worldly enjoyment and liberation.13
जगज्जैत्रैकमन्त्रेण रामनाम्नाभिरक्षितम् ।
यः कण्ठे धारयेत्तस्य करस्थाः सर्वसिद्धयः ॥
Jagajjaitraikamantreṇa Rāmanāmnābhirakshitam |
Yaḥ Kaṇṭhe Dhārayettasya Karasthāḥ Sarvasiddhayaḥ ||
MEANING
One who wears around the neck this Ram Raksha protected by the name of Rama, the single mantra that conquers the world, has all spiritual powers in hand.14
वज्रपञ्जरनामेदं यो रामकवचं स्मरेत् ।
अव्याहताज्ञः सर्वत्र लभते जयमङ्गलम् ॥
Vajrapañjaranāmedam Yo Rāmakavacham Smaret |
Avyāhatājñaḥ Sarvatra Labhate Jayamaṅgalam ||
MEANING
One who remembers this Ram Kavach, called the diamond cage, attains victory and auspiciousness everywhere with unobstructed commands.15
आदिष्टवान्यथा स्वप्ने रामरक्षामिमां हरः ।
तथा लिखितवान्प्रातः प्रबुद्धो बुधकौशिकः ॥
Ādiṣṭavānyathā Svapne Rāmarakshāmimām Haraḥ |
Tathā Likhitavānprātaḥ Prabuddho Budhakaushikaḥ ||
MEANING
As Lord Shiva instructed this Ram Raksha in a dream, so did Budha Kaushika write it down in the morning after awakening.16
आरामः कल्पवृक्षाणां विरामः सकलापदाम् ।
अभिरामस्त्रिलोकानां रामः श्रीमान् स नः प्रभुः ॥
Ārāmaḥ Kalpavrikshāṇām Virāmaḥ Sakalāpadām |
Abhirāmastrilokānām Rāmaḥ Shrīmān Sa Naḥ Prabhuḥ ||
MEANING
Rama is the garden of wish-fulfilling trees, the end of all calamities, the delight of the three worlds. That glorious Rama is our Lord.17
तरुणौ रूपसम्पन्नौ सुकुमारौ महाबलौ ।
पुण्डरीकविशालाक्षौ चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरौ ॥
Taruṇau Rūpasampannau Sukumārau Mahābalau |
Puṇḍarīkavishālākshau Chīrakrishṇājināmbarau ||
MEANING
The two brothers are youthful, endowed with beauty, gentle yet mighty in strength, with lotus-like expansive eyes, wearing tree bark and deer skin as garments.18
फलमूलाशिनौ दान्तौ तापसौ ब्रह्मचारिणौ ।
पुत्रौ दशरथस्यैतौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥
Phalamūlāshinau Dāntau Tāpasau Brahmachāriṇau |
Putrau Dasharathasyaitau Bhrātarau Rāmalakshmaṇau ||
MEANING
Living on fruits and roots, self-controlled, ascetic, celibate - these two are the sons of Dasharatha, the brothers Rama and Lakshmana.19
शरण्यौ सर्वसत्त्वानां श्रेष्ठौ सर्वधनुष्मताम् ।
रक्षःकुलनिहन्तारौ त्रायेतां नो रघूत्तमौ ॥
Sharaṇyau Sarvasattvānām Shreṣṭhau Sarvadhanushmatām |
Rakshaḥkulanihantārau Trāyetām No Raghūttamau ||
MEANING
They are the refuge of all beings, foremost among all archers, destroyers of the demon clan. May these best of Raghu's line protect us.20
आत्तसज्जधनुषाविषुस्पृशावक्षयाशुगनिषङ्गसङ्गिनौ ।
रक्षणाय मम रामलक्ष्मणावग्रतः पथि सदैव गच्छताम् ॥
Āttasajjadhanushāvishusprishāvakshayāshuganiṣaṅgasaṅginau |
Rakshaṇāya Mama Rāmalakshmaṇāvagrataḥ Pathi Sadaiva Gachchhatām ||
MEANING
With bows ready and arrows touching the string, wearing inexhaustible quivers, may Rama and Lakshmana always go before me on the path for my protection.21
सन्नद्धः कवची खड्गी चापबाणधरो युवा ।
गच्छन्मनोरथोऽस्माकं रामः पातु सलक्ष्मणः ॥
Sannaddhaḥ Kavachī Khaḍgī Chāpabāṇadharo Yuvā |
Gachchhanmanoratho'smākam Rāmaḥ Pātu Salakshmaṇaḥ ||
MEANING
Fully armed with armor, sword, bow and arrows, youthful Rama with Lakshmana, may He protect me while I travel and fulfill my desires.22
रामो दाशरथिः शूरो लक्ष्मणानुचरो बली ।
काकुत्स्थः पुरुषः पूर्णः कौसल्येयो रघूत्तमः ॥
Rāmo Dāsharathiḥ Shūro Lakshmaṇānucharo Balī |
Kākutsthaḥ Purushaḥ Pūrṇaḥ Kausalyeyo Raghūttamaḥ ||
MEANING
Rama, son of Dasharatha, valiant hero, accompanied by Lakshmana, mighty, descendant of Kakutstha, the complete Supreme Being, son of Kausalya, best of Raghu's lineage.23
वेदान्तवेद्यो यज्ञेशः पुराणपुरुषोत्तमः ।
जानकीवल्लभः श्रीमानप्रमेयपराक्रमः ॥
Vedāntavedyo Yajñeshaḥ Purāṇapuruṣottamaḥ |
Jānakīvallabhaḥ Shrīmānaprameyaparākramaḥ ||
MEANING
Knowable through Vedanta, Lord of sacrifices, the Supreme Being in the Puranas, beloved of Janaki, glorious, of immeasurable prowess.24
इत्येतानि जपन्नित्यं मद्भक्तः श्रद्धयान्वितः ।
अश्वमेधाधिकं पुण्यं सम्प्राप्नोति न संशयः ॥
Ityetāni Japannityam Madbhaktaḥ Shraddhayānvitaḥ |
Ashvamedhādhikam Puṇyam Samprāpnoti Na Samshayaḥ ||
MEANING
One who daily chants these with devotion and faith obtains merit greater than performing the Ashwamedha sacrifice, without doubt.25
रामं दूर्वादलश्यामं पद्माक्षं पीतवाससम् ।
स्तुवन्ति नामभिर्दिव्यैर्न ते संसारिणो नराः ॥
Rāmam Dūrvādalashyāmam Padmāksham Pītavāsasam |
Stuvanti Nāmabhirdivyairna Te Samsāriṇo Narāḥ ||
MEANING
Those who praise Rama, dark as durva grass, lotus-eyed, wearing yellow garments, with divine names, are not worldly beings bound by samsara.26
रामं लक्ष्मणपूर्वजं रघुवरं सीतापतिं सुन्दरं ।
काकुत्स्थं करुणार्णवं गुणनिधिं विप्रप्रियं धार्मिकम् ॥
राजेन्द्रं सत्यसन्धं दशरथतनयं श्यामलं शान्तमूर्तिं ।
वन्दे लोकाभिरामं रघुकुलतिलकं राघवं रावणारिम् ॥
Rāmam Lakshmaṇapūrvajam Raghurvaram Sītāpatim Sundaram |

MEANING
I bow to Rama, elder brother of Lakshmana, best of Raghu's clan, Sita's lord, beautiful, Kakutstha, ocean of compassion, repository of virtues, beloved of brahmins, righteous, king of kings, true to His word, son of Dasharatha, dark-complexioned, peaceful form, delight of the worlds, ornament of Raghu's lineage, Raghava, enemy of Ravana.27
रामाय रामभद्राय रामचन्द्राय वेधसे ।
रघुनाथाय नाथाय सीतायाः पतये नमः ॥
Rāmāya Rāmabhadrāya Rāmachandrāya Vedhase |

Salutations to Rama, to Ramabhadra, to Ramachandra, to the Creator, to Raghunatha, to the Lord, to the husband of Sita.28

MEANING
I remember the feet of Shri Ramachandra with my mind. I praise the feet of Shri Ramachandra with my words. I bow to the feet of Shri Ramachandra with my head. I surrender to the feet of Shri Ramachandra as my refuge.30

स्वामी रामो मत्सखा रामचन्द्रः ॥
सर्वस्वं मे रामचन्द्रो दयालु-

MEANING
Rama is my mother, Ramachandra is my father. Rama is my master, Ramachandra is my friend. Ramachandra the compassionate is my everything. I know none other, I truly know none other, I know none.31
दक्षिणे लक्ष्मणो यस्य वामे तु जनकात्मजा ।
पुरतो मारुतिर्यस्य तं वन्दे रघुनन्दनम् ॥
Dakshiṇe Lakshmaṇo Yasya Vāme Tu Janakātmajā |
Purato Mārutiryasya Tam Vande Raghunandanam ||
MEANING
On His right is Lakshmana, on His left is Janaka's daughter (Sita), in front is Maruti (Hanuman) - I bow to that Raghunandana (delight of Raghu's lineage).32
लोकाभिरामं रणरङ्गधीरं ।
राजीवनेत्रं रघुवंशनाथम् ॥
कारुण्यरूपं करुणाकरं तं ।

MEANING
I surrender to Shri Ramachandra, the delight of the worlds, courageous in battle, lotus-eyed, lord of Raghu's lineage, the embodiment of compassion, ocean of mercy.33
मनोजवं मारुततुल्यवेगं ।
जितेन्द्रियं बुद्धिमतां वरिष्ठम् ॥
वातात्मजं वानरयूथमुख्यं ।
श्रीरामदूतं शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥
Manojaṿam Mārutatulyavegam |
Jitendriyam Buddhimatām Variṣṭham ||

MEANING
I surrender to Shri Rama's messenger, swift as the mind and wind, controller of senses, foremost among the wise, son of the wind god, chief of the monkey army.34
कूजन्तं रामरामेति मधुरं मधुराक्षरम् ।
आरुह्य कविताशाखां वन्दे वाल्मीकिकोकिलम् ॥
Kūjantam Rāmarāmeti Madhuram Madhurāksharam |
Āruhya Kavitāshākhām Vande Vālmīkikokilam ||

I bow to Valmiki, the cuckoo perched on the branch of poetry, sweetly singing 'Rama, Rama' with melodious words.35
आपदामपहर्तारं दातारं सर्वसम्पदाम् ।
लोकाभिरामं श्रीरामं भूयो भूयो नमाम्यहम् ॥
Āpadāmapahartāram Dātāram Sarvasampadām |
Lokābhirāmam Shrīrāmam Bhūyo Bhūyo Namāmyaham ||
MEANING
I bow again and again to Shri Rama, the delight of the worlds, who removes calamities and bestows all prosperity.36
भर्जनं भवबीजानामर्जनं सुखसम्पदाम् ।
तर्जनं यमदूतानां रामरामेति गर्जनम् ॥
Bharjanam Bhavabījānāmarjanam Sukhasampadām |
Tarjanam Yamadūtānām Rāmarāmeti Garjanam ||
MEANING
The roar of 'Rama, Rama' burns the seeds of worldly existence, acquires happiness and prosperity, and threatens the messengers of Yama (death).37
रामो राजमणिः सदा विजयते रामं रमेशं भजे ।
रामेणाभिहता निशाचरचमू रामाय तस्मै नमः ॥
रामान्नास्ति परायणं परतरं रामस्य दासोऽस्म्यहं ।
रामे चित्तलयः सदा भवतु मे भो राम मामुद्धर ॥

MEANING
Rama, the jewel among kings, is always victorious. I worship Rama, the lord of Lakshmi. The army of demons was struck down by Rama. I bow to that Rama. There is no refuge higher than Rama. I am Rama's servant. May my mind always be absorbed in Rama. O Rama, uplift me.38
रामरामेति रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे ।
सहस्रनामतत्तुल्यं रामनाम वरानने ॥

Saying 'Rama, Rama, Rama', I delight in Rama, the delightful one. O beautiful-faced one, the name of Rama is equal to a thousand names (Vishnu Sahasranama).॥
